Bloomsburg Women's Basketball Downs Cheyney in PSAC East Opener

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team won their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener with a 71-62 win over Cheyney University on Wednesday night at the Nelson Field House.
Cheyney took an early four-point lead on two free throws by Martina Randall at the 16 minute mark. Just under two minutes later, Randall gave the Wolves their largest lead of the half when her jumper pushed the score to 10-5. Answering back, Bloomsburg's Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan), Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) and Gabe Miskinis (Lewistown/Lewistown) each scored in a 6-0 run that gave the Huskies their first lead of the half at 11-10.
Cheyney regained the lead with just under nine minutes to play on a jumper from Danielle Jones. However, Bloomsburg's Laura Lyons (Hatfield/Pennridge) hit a three-pointer and Kirby Johnson (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) scored on a lay-up to push the score to 21-18 in favor of the Huskies. However, Cheyney closed out the first half with a 7-3 run and took a 27-24 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Wolves opened with a 10-4 run that stretched the lead to nine points at 37-28. Once again, Bloomsburg battled back to tie the game, this time on a Johnson lay-up with 11 minutes to play.
Over the next five minutes, Bloomsburg put together a 14-3 run to go up by 11 points at 55-44. The lead held and Cheyney would get no closer than five points as the Huskies took the game 71-62.
Cheyney (3-8, 0-1 PSAC East) was lead in scoring by Jones who had 17 points. Lillian Penn added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Randall chipped in with 12 points.
The Huskies (5-8, 1-0 PSAC East) were lead by Miskinis and Kegerreis who each notched double-doubles in the game. Miskinis contributed 21 points and 11 boards while Kegerreis added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson rounded out the Huskies' scoring with 14 points while Nicole Boone (Mountain Top/Crestwood) finished with seven points, all scored in the second half.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Saturday against Slippery Rock at home in a 1:00 p.m. start.
